Truck Accessories

Truck Accessories are generally described as an aftermarket part that is used to enhance the style or function of the original OEM truck. Truck accessories are differentiated from other parts, typically referred to as "hard parts" or "cores" that include distributors, water pumps, radiators and the like. Some of the more popular accessories for trucks include tubular products such as nerf bars and grill guards, truck bed covers also known as tonneau covers and truck tool boxes. The most authoritative source in the automotive aftermarket is a non-profit organization know as SEMA which stand for Specialty Equipment Market Association. SEMA began in the 1950's and has evolved into an international trade association, which today serves a diverse membership of over 6,000 members representing the full spectrum of the aftermarket industry. Today SEMA is best known in to the public for the SEMA Show that is held annually in Las Vegas and hosts over 100,000 attendees making it the largest convention in the United States. Truck accessories did not really take off until the 1990's. Up until that time, OEM manufacturers including Chevy, Ford and Dodge considered trucks as work only vehicles and did little to accommodate accessories. With the dawn of the Extended Cab, trucks began taking on a more urban appeal and were being purchased for their style as well as their utility. This new audience of truck owner began to demand more than a simple tool box to adorn their truck. They began developing an appetite for accessories that would complement the look of their truck and manufacturer's began to accommodate their desires with products like billet grills, chrome fender trim, nerf bars and hood deflectors. In addition, truck manufacturer's began collaborating with and designing their vehicles to easily accommodate these accessories with bolt on ease. Today, the leading manufacture's of truck accessories include Westin Automotive, Warn, Lund and Dee Zee to name a few. Their products can be found in many privately owned brick and mortar stores around the nation. In addition, a number of on-line discount retailers also carry a full range of accessories.
